Enniscorthy 1500
“Enlightenment Parade”
To commemorate the founding of Enniscorthy by St. Senan in 510AD, Enniscorthy Town Council h commissioned Wexford based street theatre company Bui Bolg to produce a spectacular night time parade on Saturday 6th of March. The parade will passed by Saint Aidan’s Cathedral, into Market Square, through Abbey Square and over the old and the new bridge. Bui Bolg’s parade was based on the theme of “Enlightenment” and included a glowing fire float with fire performers, a sparkling River Goddess representing the River Slaney and a magnificent Celtic Bell in honour of St. Senan. To compliment the colour and carnival of Bui Bolg’s floats there was music from The Garda Band, The Ballindaggin Pipe Band and The Wexford Samba Band.
The festivities concluded with a dazzling fireworks display over Enniscorthy by Wexford pyrotechnic Pat Whelan
Colm Lowney FRSA, Bui Bolg’s Artistic Director, has designed the parade to incorporate the themes of fire, light and knowledge. The parade opened with fire from the depths of time, with a fire float, fire performers, fire breathers and burnished staff performers who will illuminate the streets of Enniscorthy with their fiery glow.
The parade will then move into the era of St Senan with a giant representation of the famous St Senan’s Bell sounding out across the land. All around this magnificent float will move the changing leaves, representing paper and the dawning of illumination. The leaves will be accompanied by performers form the FDYS, the Martina Leacy School of Dance and performers from the Bui Bolg Youth Group.
The parade will finish with a spectacular explosion of white light, sparkling and luminescent costumes will dance through the streets and center stage is the Goddess of the River Slaney.
